Why Is Josie My Style Icon?

Josie, better known as FashionMumblr, is a successful fashion blogger and YouTuber, and one of my biggest inspirations. Both for her sense of style and for the life she has built up through her blog and YouTube channel; someday I hope to be as successful, beautiful and all round inspiring as she is.

Josie’s style is very clean and classy, she often wears white or pastel colours and opts for outfits which cover more, giving her a sophisticated vibe. Her style is so elegant and classy and the white, fresh colour scheme looks pretty, clean and smart. Although I feel I’m a tad too disaster prone to stick to white all the time I have tried to let Josie’s style influence my wardrobe and I’ve invested in more white, flowing pieces.

Not only is her style amazing, Josie’s personality shines through everything she does. She is funny and lovable and not only that she is just so real. She doesn’t cover up parts of her personality to create an ‘Instagram worthy’ life or try and lie to her audience to get more views. One thing I love about watching Josie’s vlogs is that she is always eating and she even joked about it in her latest video about Ibiza, saying that there always seemed to be a portion of chips on her plate. This realistic side of her personality makes her relatable and even more of an inspiration to me.

I’ve included some of my favourite outfit posts of Josie’s from her recent blog posts, of course all photos belong to Josie I’m just using them to show how much I admire her style. The first two photos show white summer dresses, staple pieces in Josie’s wardrobe, as these make up the majority of her summer wardrobe. The delicate lace detail on the second dress is so intricate and pretty, this is a perfect piece for transitioning from day to night as you could wear it with sandals or dress it up with heels.

The second dress, a stunning pink number from True Decadence, is actually one of the dresses I had my eye on for my 18th birthday. When I saw it feature on Josie’s blog I fell even more in love with it and I can honestly say it’s one of the prettiest pieces I’ve ever seen her wear. The next outfit, made up of a pussybow blouse and suedette skirt, is something I would wear on a daily basis as it’s so classy and sophisticated. I’m sure you can clearly see where Josie fits in as my style inspiration.

Josie also includes sleepwear and lingerie on her blog and channel, something which interests me as I want to go into intimate apparel as a job. These gorgeous, silky pyjamas look so luxurious I can’t hide my jealousy. So much of Josie’s wardrobe gives me wardrobe envy, I’m in love with her style! I’m going to create a few more posts centred around Josie as my style icon as she is such an inspiration to me and I’m sure after reading this post you’ve also fallen head over heels for all her amazing pieces.

Fashion Police – Mannequins With Visible Ribs

I couldn’t believe what I saw when I was out shopping the other day, surely I’d been wrong, surely any self respecting shop wouldn’t display mannequins with visible ribs. But no, unfortunately what I saw was very much real and I admit it made me feel a little sick. What was the need for these skeletal mannequins? Tall, stick thin mannequins with almost hollow stomachs and carved out ribs were stood in the shop window displaying the clothes that this shop were selling, half of which were clipped into position as the shop didn’t even sell clothes that small. It made no sense to me, the mannequins definitely didn’t entice me to go into the shop. Instead they left me questioning myself about my own body and what our world has come to.

Size zero is a phenomenon that has hit the fashion world by storm over the past twenty years and has resulted in a multitude of problems across the modelling and fashion industry. Runways are full of skeletal girls battling eating disorders, shops display mannequins with impossibly tiny figures and the media portray this twisted parody of the human body as the epitome of beautiful. I’m not saying that thin women, and people in general, can’t be pretty, of course they can. All shapes and sizes are beautiful, but the problem starts when a particular body type begins to be presented as perfect and every other shape is discouraged.

For most people this stick thin body is an unachievable, unhealthy way to be as the only way to get to this weight would be through starvation or other unhealthy methods. So why are our high street shops displaying these mannequins which 99% of their customers can’t relate to?

In today’s world surely we should be trying to show that every shape is beautiful instead of focusing on a skeleton as our ideal. It’s hard enough to do that ourselves without the shops we visit depressing us even more. In a perfect world there would be a multitude of different shaped mannequins which we could all relate to, thus making us feel more confident, represented and included as we enter the shop.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get a photo of the mannequins in the shop I visited but I have found some photos online of similar mannequins being used in other shops. Of course, the pictures belong to the respective owners.

These mannequins supporting unhealthy bodies need to be stopped, I’m sure you agree. The sooner we promote beauty as being all shapes and sizes, the enter. Remember, we are all beautiful.

This post comes as the first in my new collection of posts, Fashion Police. I’ll focus on problematic areas within the fashion world and the latest news in the industry, I hope you enjoy!

How To Style: White Jeans

White jeans are a necessity in any wardrobe so it may come as a shock when I tell you that I only recently bought my first ever pair. I’ve been searching for years to no avail but I eventually found this pair in Primark for only £9! Although these weren’t in petite sizing,so ended up being a tiny bit long, but I rolled up the ends and I actually really like the look it creates. The high waist elongates my legs and pulls in my stomach, which is always a good thing, right? White jeans are so popular because they’re just so versatile so I’ve decided to show you how to style them up both for a casual day out or a fancier look for the nighttime.

The first look is definitely a more casual, daytime look; I’d wear this out shopping or to hang out with friends. The pink tones are bang on trend and perfect for summer and white jeans are, of course, permanently in style. A t-shirt and jeans is practically the definition of casual dressing but I’d like to think this outfit still remains very girly and feminine due to the detail, and, of course, the pink.

For this outfit I paired the jeans with this light pink lace detailed top from H&M, this top is a perfect casual piece and an absolute steal at only £8.99. They had a rainbow of colours of this top in store when I was there and I definitely recommend picking a few up because they’re so versatile and the  top is so intricately detailed, it’s gorgeous.

Of course, my favourite pink brogues, which I’m sure you’re all sick of by now, have made yet another reappearance. It’s not my fault they go with every outfit I own! They’re almost the exact same shade of pink as my top in this outfit, what a pair!

For a fancier, nighttime look I swapped the t shirt for a wrap-around cropped top; this was only £9.99 from H&M and it is absolutely gorgeous! The colours in it are so vibrant and perfect for the summer time and the cut of the top is just so flattering. It emphasises cleavage and the bow at the back is a really pretty detail.

Heels, for me, are a necessity for a night out and these black stilettos area perfect basic pair that everyone should own. Mine are a couple of years old but there are plenty of alternative options from almost every shop there is! Heels help make the legs look even longer, this outfit is incredibly flattering.

I actually found this bag at a small stall in my local shopping centre so I’m unable to link it but it’s just so gorgeous I had to include it. It’s the perfect size to fit in everything I need, it’s become my new best friend.

Make sure to head over to my YouTube channel to watch the video for these looks!

June Wishlist

Britain’s sun has finally appeared, I’ve been abroad and my summer wardrobe has definitely come out. Now is the time for the outfits to accentuate the all important tan and make you look chic whether you’re lounging by the pool or out shopping in the sunshine. So what am I looking for this June?

1. White heels

I realised the other day that I don’t own a pair of simple white heels. These are such a versatile pair of shoes, especially in the summer when the majority of outfits are light coloured, so I’m definitely on the hunt for a pair. Ideally I’d get a low block pair as they’re definitely in style right now (and far easier to walk around in!), perhaps with an ankle tie as these are really pretty.

2. Occasion wear

Wearing occasion wear in the daytime is a trend that I could definitely latch on to. This doesn’t mean wearing a ballgown to Tesco, but instead wearing slightly more ornate dresses or skirts than would normally be advertised as ‘day dresses’. Josie from Fashion Mumblr pulls off this trend spectacularly and I hope to accomplish it just as well.

3. Neck ties

I’m not too sure about this one but I’ve seen Freddy Cousin Brown trying them out and thought I’d give them a go. They’re nothing like anything I’d ever usually wear but at the minute I’m trying to broaden my fashion horizons and this could be a good place to start.

So, what did I manage to find from my May wishlist?

My search for tailored shorts was successful and I got a gorgeous paper bag waist, high waisted pair from ASOS. They were £22 but honestly looked so high end! They cinch me in at the waist and they’re a lovely, classy length. I’m honestly head over heels for these shorts.

I’m yet to find any camisole tops that I really like but I’m still on the hunt. However, the main reason for getting a camisole top was to pair it with the shorts mentioned above and I’ve found an alternative for that, my white sleeveless blouse mentioned in my Primark haul. So, we’ll see if I need to invest in a cami!

That covers everything from last month’s wishlist, more next month!

Makeup Bag Essentials

I’m going to talk you through all of my holy grail beauty products that you’ll always find in my makeup bag from primer to eyeliner. I use makeup on a daily basis whether that for school or going out and I use the majority of these products each and every day.

Before I begin my makeup I always put lip balm on to make sure my lips stay hydrated, my favourite is the Nivea Soft Rosé as it keeps my lips feeling soft but also smells heavenly. The first time I used this I was actually about six years old and I remember being obsessed by this little pink ‘lipstick’ my mom had bought me! Years later who would have known I’d refind it and be unable to live without it. I actually ended up using this particular lip balm again because I’d run out of strawberry Chapstick and couldn’t seem to find it  anywhere, so I decided to revert to this old favourite, and I’m so glad I did. Although I do love Chapstick I feel like the Nivea lip balms are even more hydrating, perfect for healthy lips.

To make sure I have a perfect base for my makeup I use the Barry M Flawless Colour Correcting Primer, it has a green colour to it which is perfect for balancing out redness in the skin, which if you have spot prone skin like me which can often get aggravated, is perfect. I pair this primer with the Maybelline Super Stay foundation, I had been using a different type of this foundation, the Super Stay Better Skin, but after being unable to find this in my local Superdrug or Boots I turned to the original Super Stay formula. It definitely does what it says on the bottle and stays in place all day, the only criticism I have is that it does change colour slightly which can get quite annoying, but the formula is very complimentary so I feel like it will be in my makeup bag for quite a while.

Rimmel’s Stay Matte powder comes everywhere with me (so please ignore the rather battered packaging!) and it has been my favourite powder for as long as I can remember. It blurs all my imperfections whilst adding that little touch of extra coverage that I always look for from my makeup. A definite essential!

My little sister got me a W7 set of a few different palettes for my birthday last year and I’ll be the first to shout its praises as an incredibly affordable yet amazing makeup brand. The Cheeky Trio face palette is my holy grail for everyday bronzer and blusher. I don’t tend to use the highlighter for actual highlighter as I prefer a shimmer highlighter but do occasionally use it as a face powder if I’ve got a little tanned as it is fairly yellow toned. My favourite part of The Cheeky Trio definitely has to be the blusher as its coral colour is just so flattering, I’m in love!

To get that chiselled contour I turn to the Revolution Ultra Contour Palette as I think it offers the perfect contour shade for my skin tone. Makeup Revolution is a brand I’ve been loving ever since it started to appear on the high street and the contour palette is no exception.

My all time favourite highlighter has to be the Pink Lights highlighter from Makeup Revolution, it adds the perfect shimmering touch to my makeup and the colour is just so pretty. I originally got this highlighter in a makeup advent calendar and I’ve loved it ever since.

My current favourite eyeshadow palette (as I’m sure you can tell from the fact that I’ve hit pan!) is The Blushed Nudes palette from Maybelline. The colours suit me, my colouring and the colours of my clothes perfectly. I can make so many everyday makeup looks from this one palette and as it’s very small it’s also very travel friendly.

The two eyeliners I turn to are the Avon Super Extend eyeliner and the Helen E Cosmetics eyeliner in Soft Black. I use the Super Extend liquid eyeliner to create my winged eyeliner as the felt tip pen style is very easy to use to make that perfect flick. I use the Helen E eyeliner to fill in my waterline as it is very soft and pigmented. This combination makes my eyeliner stay on all day and I think it’s great.

I tried out this mascara after seeing it recommended online by beauty bloggers and I’m so glad I did. This mascara shapes, darkens, volumises and lengthens my lashes so that they frame my eyes very well. I’ve been using this mascara for about a year and I love it.

I love lip liner especially as I find it hard to perfectly fill in my lips with lipstick, so lip liner is very useful to give me a guide to stick to. My two favourites have to be the Avon Ultra Glimmerstick which I have in quite a few colours and the Collection lip liner which I also have in multiple colours, but my favourite has to be the Nude Pink shade, it has a slightly terracotta colour to it and I love it.

The finishing touch to any look is, of course, lipstick. Here are my two favourite high end lip products, Midi by Colourpop and Velvet Teddy by MAC. Midi is a gorgeous pink nude shade and its great matte formula could honestly survive anything, I’ll put it on and it is still there hours and hours later. Velvet Teddy is a much more nourishing formula and also a very beautiful colour. It is the classic MAC lipstick to buy and I’m very glad I have it in my collection.

Of course the majority of my lipstick collection is much more affordable and for bargain makeup my two favourites have to be the Collection lipstick in Rose or the Avon lipstick, which I have too many to count! For an everyday look my favourite would have to be Frozen Rose for that subtle pink tint.

That sums up my makeup essentials, I honestly wouldn’t be able to survive without these products in my makeup bag and I’d recommend each and every single one.

Why is Taylor my style icon?

Taylor has such a diverse, yet consistently beautiful, sense of style that I can’t help but fall in love with everything she wears. I’ve been a fan of Taylor and her music since I was very little and she inspires me in so many different ways, not only with her wardrobe. Her style has developed so much over the time she’s been famous that she has practically covered every style I’ve ever been in to and that’s what makes her really original and iconic in my eyes. My favourite era of Taylor Swift fashion was probably around 2012 where her style was extremely classy combined with her statement red lipstick; I feel this connects to my current style as it’s very girly and pretty. I’m going to take you through a brief timeline of Taylor’s fashion throughout her fame to show why I love her so much!

2006

IMG_4296.JPG

When Taylor first got famous her style was extremely ‘countryfied’ with long, flowing dresses and lots and lots of cowboy boots. Although I personally wouldn’t wear a look that’s quite as country as this I do like the flowing material and the bohemian vibes.

2007

Taylor’s style had completely changed by 2007 and was now a lot more princess inspired as seen in the corsets and flowing ballgowns.  This is a very pretty, cute era for Taylor and it suits her young, good girl vibe very well.

2008

Taylor’s style had really changed and matured by the following year. I love the glitz and glamour of the sequinned dress, I actually have a skirt that’s very similar. This look just looks perfect for any party, so dazzling!

2009

This look from 2009 incorporates the tulle, princess vibes from previous years with the glittery, more grown up look of 2008. I think Taylor looks stunning here as the strapless dress combined with the gorgeous up-do creates such a beautiful look.

2010

Taylor’s street style in 2010 still shows remnants of her country style at the start of her career with her knee high boots and bohemian style top. The wide, chiffon top is actually still in style, I’d wear this!

2011

Taylor’s style in 2011 was very cute and girly, similar to my style now. Pretty floral dresses and cardigans were staple pieces in this era of Taylor fashion.

2012

2012 brought the start of the classic red lip Taylor, a very classy, vintage inspired look. This nautical outfit is simply perfect, once again cute little dresses are very apparent in Taylor’s wardrobe.

2013

Her red lipstick continues to be a prominent feature of her look but Tsylor begins to move away from the girly little dresses and opts for the still stylish skinny jeans, brogues and blazer. My style is actually very similar to this at the moment for a casual look.

2014

I love this era of Taylor as she just looks so effortlessly classy in her skirts, blouses and heels. Taylor never seems to have a hair out of place, so naturally beautiful!

2015

How classy does Taylor look here? Her style in 2015 was made up of short dresses and heels, how gorgeous are these heels, I’m in love!

2016

Taylor’s look has completely transformed here into a much cooler, more hipster look with short denim shorts and edgy, cropped hair. Somehow Taylor still manages to pull it off!

2017

Taylor has perfected the monochrome New York street style here and although it’s very far removed from her girly, cute style of years before I love it just as much.

That completes the timeline of Taylor’s style, I love each and every era of her fashion evolution and I think she truly is a style icon.

How To Style: Black Jeans

Black jeans are a staple piece in everyone’s wardrobe and this high waisted pair from New Look have been my go to pair for many years. I struggle to find skinny jeans that are actually skinny enough to fit my legs (small girl problems right there!) but these not only fit my waist perfectly but also actually pull in tight to my ankles; I could hardly believe it when I put them on! Black jeans are so versatile and I believe that the perfect pair can easily transition from day to night.

I decided to put together two different outfits, one a little more for going out on the night time and one for use in the day. Both include this gorgeous baby pink colour which is perfect for the spring time and perfectly fit my girly, classy style.

This outfit is very pretty yet still remains casual. I find it quite hard to find daytime outfits that can look classy without looking too overdressed but I think this outfit captures that vibe perfectly. I paired the black high waisted skinny jeans from New Look with this frilled top from H&M, although it’s long sleeved it’s very thin making it not too heavy for the spring time and still manages to keep you warm on the cooler days (which are quite common in the British spring time!).

I paired these with my favourite shoes at the moment, my little pink brogues from Primark. They finish off every outfit so perfectly I could hardly not use them in this post! I really like this outfit and the little details about it make it just that little bit more special. The frilled edges of the top are just so pretty and feminine, I’m in love.

This outfit is a little bit fancier and with the heels this would be perfect for a night out. I truly believe that jeans can be worn on a night out, as long as they’re styled up correctly. For this outfit I paired the New Look jeans with this frilled blouse from Primark and pink block heels, also from Primark. The heels have come out a lot warmer toned on camera than they are in real life, they’re a lot more pink in person.

This outfit is bang on trend, especially the frills across the front of the blouse which are definitely in fashion right now. Pink is also very in style at the minute as it is spring time and light, pretty colours are back in the shops. The pink themed carried on through to the shoes which I think are absolutely beautiful. The little cross over ankle strap detail is very pretty and delicate which makes the shoes very feminine and dainty looking. The short, block heel is very practical (and much easier to walk in than some of my other skyscraper heels!)

The final touch to each of these outfits was my rose gold Pandora princess ring which is one of my prized possessions, it’s just so beautiful! The pink tones of the ring matches the two outfits perfectly and it is truly the best addition to any outfit to make it fit for a princess.
